Dance, rap, graffiti and style — how young people in France made hip-hop their own.

Hip-hop arrived in France in the early 1980s through records, radio and travelling crews. In 1984 the TV show H.I.P. H.O.P., presented by Sidney, brought breakdance into living rooms across the country, and a generation started practising on cardboard in squares and car parks.
In the 1990s, groups such as IAM from Marseille and Suprême NTM from Seine-Saint-Denis, along with MC Solaar, gave French rap its own voice — telling stories of the suburbs, identity and everyday life with a precision that made it unmistakably French.
Beyond the music, hip-hop shaped a way of dressing: sportswear, caps and oversized silhouettes worn with intention. Streetwear today still carries that energy — clothes as a way to say who you are and where you come from.
